Kaudulla National Park, located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, is a renowned wildlife sanctuary celebrated for its rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. Spanning over 6,900 hectares, it is one of Sri Lanka's 26 national parks and an essential part of the island's conservation efforts.

1. The Elephant Gathering

Kaudulla is best known for its large elephant population. Between August and December, during the dry season, the park becomes a hotspot for "The Gathering," where hundreds of elephants congregate near the Kaudulla Reservoir. This event is one of the largest gatherings of Asian elephants in the world.

2. Other Wildlife

In addition to elephants, the park is home to a wide variety of species, including:

• Mammals: Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, and toque macaques.
• Birds: Spot-billed pelicans, painted storks, and numerous migratory birds.
• Reptiles: Mugger crocodiles and monitor lizards.

3. Ecosystem and Landscape

The park features a mix of grasslands, open plains, forests, and wetlands, providing diverse habitats. The Kaudulla Reservoir is central to the ecosystem, supporting both wildlife and local agriculture.

4. Safari Experience

Visitors can enjoy jeep safaris, typically lasting 3–4 hours, to explore the park and observe wildlife. The park is especially picturesque during sunrise and sunset, offering fantastic opportunities for photography.

5. Location and Accessibility

Kaudulla National Park is about 190 km from Colombo and is easily accessible from popular tourist destinations like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. It is part of the elephant corridor connecting nearby parks like Minneriya and Wasgamuwa.

The best time to visit Kaudulla is from August to December, coinciding with the dry season and the elephant gathering.
